Facility / Equipment Upgrades News

Previous Unit

Dust Collection System

The first exciting upgrade for B&L is our new state-of-the-art Dust Collection System. We were able to work closely with City officials, ensuring that all aspects of the system and installation met their requirements. Integrated into this new system is a spark and fire suppression system and energy management system. B&L has always taken pride and gone to great lengths to maintain a clean and safe work environment for the benefit of our neighbors and our employees, and now we can take that commitment to the next level. We hope that this upgraded, state-of-the-art system directly translates to better productivity and thus more quality products for our customers. The variable speed 100Hp motor will be regulated by computers which monitors how much vacuum is actually needed at any given time. When fewer machines are running, auto gates will close down various duct lines and reduce motor load and Horsepower to half or even less, thus saving the maximum amount of energy.

Surface Planer / Sander

We will now have the ability to both surface plane and sand all in one smooth process with our new Time Saver Planer Sander. This will accommodate all the way up to 50″ wide panels and surface sand full 4′ x 8′ sheets of material, no problem. This will allow us to move faster with increased efficiency and quality, turning out better products to our customers.

Facility Expansion (Photos to come…)

Due to B&L’s continued growth, office and shop expansion and renovations have become necessary, which began late 2015. Included in this expansion is a substantial office build-out, necessary to accommodate our ever-growing staff of experienced Project Managers, Computer-Assisted Designers, and various Support Staff. In addition, more shop space is being added to more efficiently fulfill large customer orders. For our employees, a much-needed renovation of the lunch room has been  completed. We hope these upgrades will not only benefit our employees but help turn out top-quality products to our customers in a timely manner.

Local. Creative. Delicious

B&L was spotted in a new video for its role in the production of a

special new product for coffee lovers. Check out the video.

Employee Appreciation

In January B&L took a much-deserved break from a busy production schedule to recognize all its hard-working employees, past and present. Employees and guests were invited to share an evening of food, fun, and prizes at McMenamins Grand Lodge. On the menu was prime rib, raffle prizes and a side of karaoke.

During the trivia round that evening, we learned that B&L founders, Lenny and Patty Everly have been blessed with over 50 years of happy marriage. Among Lenny’s various entrepreneurial endeavors, he decided to open B&L Wood Creations as a small wood shop in 1982. We also found out that Detroit is one of only two major US cities that we have yet to install our products in, (the other being Phoenix). But guess where we were in February? …. So, I guess it’s down to Phoenix. …Continue Reading

Safety Training Day

U of O Project Comes to a Finish

For weeks now, sports enthusiast have been following the excitement surrounding the University of Oregon’s new football performance center in Eugene.

This is one of the largest, most competitive, luxurious, modern, expensive, and comprehensive college football training facilities in the world. Even NFL teams are jealous! The press surrounding its grand opening continues,  giving everyone a taste of what Oregon has to offer and making us all want to get a closer look at the unique details inside the facility.

Check out this SI YouTube video to see what makes this football center so special.

In addition to the actual training facilities for the athletes, the building includes a museum  of trophies, championship rings, even a display wall with miniature figures showcasing past uniforms throughout Duck  football history.

Hundreds of thoughtful details went into the making of these special, unique designs and custom spaces, often incorporating elements of historic significance of the University and  its benefactors.  We were happy to partner with Gallagher Designs in helping create some of these one-of-a-kind exhibits.

We were thrilled to be a part of these events and enjoyed very much the challenge of increasing the already exceedingly high expectations of our clients.  Thanks to all the talented designers we worked with to successfully complete such a gratifying project.

CNC Speaks Morse code

Greg, a customer of ours recently got in touch with us regarding the final look and finished results of a major renovation he did to his Sellwood home. We made a number of custom Apple Ply staircase panels that were installed throughout the beautifully-designed home last year.   What makes these staircase panels so unique is not only their modern and sleek design, but the fact that the dot and dash design we cut into them is actually Morse code. Each strip spells out the name of a member of his family. What an original idea!   In fact, according to Greg, the AIA Design Awards Jury conducted a “comments” presentation and they showed our railing as “the most creative use of wood they had seen across all the submittals.” Check out this recent post featuring photos of the house and the panels B&L Wood Creations fabricated. The images will definitely inspire you and get your creative energy flowing if you are involved in or thinking about a similar design project in your home or business.

Joe Brown Park, New Orleans

Last week we returned to the city of New Orleans to work on the Joe Brown Park renovation project.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with this project, Joe Brown Park served as a community refuge for decades before being destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Since then,  Nike and the City of New Orleans, together with the Drew Brees Foundation, have undertaken a restoration project to rebuild the park and restore its facilities to the community. The renovation includes an 8-lane track, state-of-the-art football field and gymnasium with attached classroom, among other things. The goal: To encourage the community’s youth to come together and get active in positive activities such as sports. Bringing back a place for them to do this is key.

“We will bring sport, play and physical activity back to New Orleans East,” said Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints quarterback and co-founder of the Brees Dream Foundation.  “Sports are a great way for young people to develop social skills, build confidence, learn discipline and most importantly, have fun.   Brittany and I are honored to help create opportunities for local kids to experience the benefits of becoming more physically active at a young age.”

B&L participated in Phase I of the restoration of the Joe W. Brown Park gymnasium referred to as “Victory Hall.” We worked specifically on the classroom part of it, setting up a space that will later be fully equipped with computer equipment.
